The Coast Guard Meritorious Service Commendation was presented Monday to 199 service members who responded during Hurricane Emily.
Those honored for their service from Aug. 31, 1993, to Sept. 17, 1993, came from Aids to Navigation at Hatteras Inlet, Group Cape Hatteras, and stations Oregon Inlet, Hatteras Inlet, Ocracoke and Coinjock. They included reserves and auxiliary members.
During and following the hurricane, these Coast Guard members aided 350 families. They went door-to-door to provide assistance, repaired buildings and homes, provided security, cleared trees, provided drinking water, built temporary shelters and ran the only hot kitchen on the island.
The storm last summer left 583 homes uninhabitable, and 90 percent of the homes on Hatteras had flood damage, according to Coast Guard figures.
