TIDEWATER SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT OPENS TONIGHT

The 13th annual Tidewater Softball Championships - the tournament that determines area bragging rights - begins tonight with church and coed quarterfinal and semifinal action at Greenbrier Park and Indian River High.

Men's and women's quarterfinals and semifinals are Wednesday evening, with the championships Friday at Greenbrier.

New to the competition this season is the three-day format allowing individual city runner-up teams in women, church and coed divisions to compete. In previous years, only city champions in those divisions advanced.

A home-run hitting competition for one player from each men's open and church team will be held at 8:15 p.m. Friday - in between the church and men's championships. An accuracy-hitting contest for women and women from coed entries will be held at 8:15 p.m. Friday before the women's championship.

In church action tonight on Greenbrier Park field No. 1, Virginia Beach champion Hope Lutheran plays a Norfolk runner-up yet to be determined at 7 p.m., followed by Chesapeake champion Mt. Pleasant Mennonite against Portsmouth runner-up Alliance CMA at 8:15 p.m. The winners meet in a 9:30 p.m. semifinal.

On field No. 2, Portsmouth winner St. Theresa's faces Beach runner-up Christian Athletes at 7 p.m., followed by Chesapeake runner-up Bethel Baptist against a yet-to-be determined Norfolk champion at 8:15 p.m. Winners meet at 9:30 p.m.

In coed quarterfinals on Indian River field No. 1, Chesapeake champion Hooters/Hamilton faces Portsmouth runner-up Towne Point Pub at 7 p.m., followed by Norfolk winner Bad Company against Beach runner-up Stihl Stealth Bombers at 8:15 p.m. The semi is at 9:30 p.m.

On field No. 2, Beach champion Superior/Hudgins faces Chesapeake runner-up Electric Services at 7 p.m., followed by Portsmouth winner Tailgates against Norfolk runner-up Tri-City Stars at 8:15 p.m. The semifinal is at 9:30

The men's open event begins Wednesday at Greenbrier with competition on field No. 1 pitting Beach champion Tile Magic against Portsmouth runner-up P-Town Merchants at 7 p.m., and Norfolk champs Clancy's against Chesapeake runner-up B.N. Core Supply at 8:15 p.m. On field No. 2, Chesapeake winner VMS Hitmen take on Beach runner-up Sweitzer's/Main Event at 7 p.m., followed by Portsmouth champ Harrison's Moving and Storage against Norfolk runner-up Warriors at 8:15 p.m.
