JOHN L. PARKER JR.

John Leonard Parker Jr., died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 1994, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Mr. Parker was born June 25, 1917 to John Leonard Parker Sr. and Louise Shield Parker. He was married May 15, 1948 to Bolton Cowen Parker of Williamston, who survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Jenette Low, and two grandchildren, Parker Low and Tom Low, all of Roanoke, Va.; and a sister, Doris Northey of Virginia Beach.

Mr. Parker was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II and attended North Carolina State University. He was for many years on the N.C. State Board of Agriculture and served under its present chairman, Jim Graham. He had for many years served on the N.C. Board of Pesticides. Mr. Parker was mayor of the Town of Colerain for 10 years and for six years prior to that was on Colerain's Town Board of Commissioners. He was one of the founders and active members of the Colerain Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the State Board of Farmers Home Administration. He was also a member of the Sergeant-at-Arms Staff in the N.C. House of Representatives for many years and was very active in the Democratic Party.

In 1987 Mr. and Mrs. Parker moved to Williamston, which has been their home since that time. He was a member of Colerain Methodist Church and since their move to Williamston had been a communicant of Memorial Baptist Church in Williamston. He was active in the agriculture business and for all of his years was an active agriculturist and sportsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was known by the nicknames ``Pig'' and ``Piggy.''

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Bennie Pledger of Whiteville and the Rev. Robbie Parker of Williamston. The services will be held at Memorial Baptist Church at 4 p.m. today with interment following in Woodlawn Cemetery, Williamston. Biggs Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or to a charity of one's choice.
