CHURCH, COED FINALS ARE SET IN TIDEWATER SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

Competition in the 13th annual Tidewater Softball Championships got under way Tuesday with quarterfinal and semifinal play in the church and coed divisions at Greenbrier Park and Indian River High.

In church action, Chesapeake teams dominated play, with Bethel Baptist and the Mt. Pleasant Mennonites advancing to Friday's championship.

Bethel went forward on the strength of a 27-10 victory over St. Theresa's of Portsmouth and a 12-9 victory over First Lutheran of Norfolk. Al Davenport led the Bethel wins, going 9-for-9 with two home runs.

Mt. Pleasant defeated Hope Lutheran of Virginia Beach, 6-1, and Alliance CMA of Portsmouth, 14-2. Shortstop Dennis Wenger went 4-for-4 against Alliance, while Richard Miller was 3-for-3 and Dennis Yoder was 2-for-2 in the semifinal victory over Hope Lutheran.

In coed action, Superior/Hudgins of Virginia Beach and Norfolk's Bad Company made the title game.

Superior/Hudgins advanced with a 11-10 victory over Electrical Services of Chesapeake - on a home run by Steve Gilbert in the bottom of the eighth - and a 21-7 victory over Tri-City of Norfolk.

Bad Company moved up with an 8-7 victory over the Stihl Stealth Bombers of Virginia Beach and a 14-13 victory over Hooters/Hamilton of Chesapeake.

The men's open event begins tonight at Greenbrier with competition on field No. 1 pitting Beach champion Tile Magic against Portsmouth runner-up P-Town Merchants at 7 p.m., and Norfolk champs Clancy's against Chesapeake runner-up B.N. Core Supply at 8:15 p.m. On field No. 2, Chesapeake winner VMS Hitmen take on Beach runner-up Sweitzer's/Main Event at 7 p.m., followed by Portsmouth champ Harrison's Moving and Storage against Norfolk runner-up Warriors at 8:15 p.m.

Women's action begins tonight at Indian River. On field No. 1, Portsmouth winner P.J.'s Elite faces Norfolk runner-up Fleet Printing at 7 p.m., and Beach winner Superior Pest Control faces Chesapeake runner-up Chesapeake Angels at 8:15 p.m. On field No. 2, Chesapeake champion D.C. Controllers meet a to-be-named runner-up at 7 p.m., followed by Norfolk champ Vikettes vs. Beach runner-up Bay Area Carpet Care at 8:15. Men's and women's semifinals are at 9:30 p.m. by CNB
