Education: Bachelor of science in elementary education, with a concentration in counseling, and a master's in elementary education from Old Dominion University. She received a doctorate in school administration from Vanderbilt University.
Previous position: Principal at Little Creek Elementary for three years. In past jobs with the Norfolk school system, she was principal at Ghent for eight years in an experimental program using open classrooms; an assistant principal at Monroe Elementary; and a teacher at Larchmont Elementary. She also was principal and owner of the private K-12 Community School of Grand Canaria in Spain.
Goals: ``I really see this as a gift. Probably my biggest goal is to get every kid reading on grade level or above. Most of these kids here are at-risk. So it's going to be a challenge. I just really think this is going to be fun.''
Obstacles: ``None. The sky's the limit. We are looking at a little monetary problem. The school drew up a grant to get some accelerated reader software and I think we're going to be all right. We're hurting for computers.''
Proudest accomplishment as an educator: ``I would have to say last year at Little Creek. A fifth-grade teacher came to me and said every student was reading on grade level. That was something I hadn't heard in 25 years of teaching.''
Hobbies: Reading, sailing, golf, writing, painting and drawing and swimming.
Book you'd recommend: ``Between Parent and Child,'' by Haim Ginott. ``This book comes out of the 1960s. It was a best seller in those days. It's about how to raise children. It's an easy-to-read paperback.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
