Birthplace: Norfolk
Birthdate: June 18, 1946
Family: Single
Pets: None. Used to have birds.
Education: Bachelor of science degree in education, master's in curriculum and instruction and certification for supervision and administration from Old Dominion University.
Previous position: Principal at Fairlawn Elementary for three years. Before that, she was an assistant principal at Norview and Monroe elementary schools. She was a teacher at Monroe and Willard elementary schools and was teacher of the year for Norfolk schools in 1986. She worked two years as teacher disseminator for Willard Model School, a program to test innovative ideas for Virginia.
Goals: ``The first one is to really be a facilitator to make good things happen for the community and the teachers and the students. I want to help children to become engaged and involved in learning. Not only do I want them to work hard, but also to have a goal, a dream, something to reach for. From what I know, it's almost a model situation here. That comes because the teachers and parents and students and the communty work so well together.''
Obstacles: ``I would want to ensure that the perception of what is ongoing and happening in the school is well understood and that people would know firsthand the great things that are going on here. I think people may stereotype what a public school is. I want to open all lines of communications so people will feel free to come into the school and know firsthand what it's all about.''
Proudest accomplishment as an educator: ``I would have to say the 10 years I had in the classroom. Being a teacher is really my proudest accomplishment. I think I felt a great responsibility for the education of children in my classroom, realizing the difference you make in molding lives.''
Hobbies: Golf, computers, photography, reading.
