CAMP ALLEN ELEMENTARY CAROLYN P. SANDS

CAROLYN P. SANDS

Birthplace: Corpus Cristi, Texas. Moved to Norfolk when she was 2.

Birthdate: Jan. 1, 1948.

Family: Single

Pets: Three dogs: Sammy, a cocker spaniel; Sam, a toy poodle, and Scotty, a mixed breed.

Education: Bachelor of science degree in elementary education and master's in administration from Old Dominion University. She will finish her doctorate degree in education administration in December from Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Previous position: She had served as the first principal of Tanners Creek Elementary, since it opened four years ago. Before that, she was principal of St. Helena Elementary and was an assistant principal of Lakewood, Willard, Crossroads, Calcott, Monroe and Gatewood schools. She taught sixth grade at Fairlawn, Camp Allen, Monroe and Tidewater Park schools and was a resource team leader for the federal Chapter 1 program at Camp Allen and Monroe schools.

Goals: ``My goal right now has been to get to learn about the different special education programs that are going to be here that I didn't have at my previous school. We have a multi-handicapped class here. Understanding their needs will be important. My goal is to have strong parental and community involvement and a strong instructional program for all the students.''

Obstacles: ``None. I've heard nothing but good things about this faculty. I used to teach here, so it's like coming back home.''

Proudest accomplishment as an educator: ``Opening Tanners Creek. It was really a strong learning experience for me of what actually went into a school. We did a lot of things that were challenging and new.''

Hobbies: Loves to play golf, snow ski, and pleasure read.

Book you'd recommend: For pleasure, Tom Clancy's ``Clear and Present Danger,'' ``if you like spies and action things.'' For educational pursuits, ``Zapp,'' by William Byham, a book about improving quality, productivity and employee satisfaction. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
