HILL WINS FRANKLIN BOWL AMATEUR TITLE

It was like an old western shootout, and the foes were not exactly strangers to each other. They had faced each other in league play many times before.

George Hill took no prisoners as he rolled a 209 to take the amateur bowling tournament at the Franklin Bowl last Saturday. David Gray started the final match shakily, made a comeback effort but fell way short with a 165 to place second.

Gray had gained the finals by defeating Duanne Rupp, 191-180, but Rupp went on to take third by firing a 248 to beat Thomas Blanton who had a 172, good for fourth place. Rupp also trimmed Alan Glasgow earlier in the event, 231-180, and Glasgow came in fifth.

The playing field was cut to five spots after two rounds. Paul Donadio, winner of the last tourney, missed qualifying with a 423 series and settled for sixth place.

Winners of the two high handicap series were Rupp, with a 702 three-game series and Hill with a 457 two-game series.

Another highlight of the week was when Al Woods achieved his dream during the men's league last Thursday night by tossing 12 consecutive strikes. A Union Camp employee and a 170-average bowler, Woods was still shaking hours after the last ball left his hand.

``I just can't believe it,'' he kept repeating. ``I came close once a couple of years ago and bowled a 286, but this really hasn't sunk in yet. I really did it.''

In other bowling news, Mack and Connie Carpenter captured the Scotch doubles event Friday with a 629 series. Second place went to Eric Crafton and Pat Edwards with a 598 series. Bobby Cornwell and Tina Story had a 566 for third.
