JAMES W. POWELL JR.

James W. Powell Jr., 76, of the 2600 block of Roundtree Circle, retired owner and president of Powell-McClellan Lumber Company, Inc., died Aug. 9, 1994, in Norfolk.

Mr. Powell was born in Norfolk and retired from the lumber company in 1983 after 42 years of service. He was the widower of Beverly Green Powell, who passed away in 1989. Mr. Powell was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and Knights of Pythias (NU)106. He was a graduate of Maury High School and attended Norfolk Business College, where he obtained a two-year degree.

Survivors include two daughters, Laurie Powell Cartwright of Chesapeake and Patricia Seegers of Virginia Beach, and sons-in-law, John Michael Cartwright and James Seegers; a sister, Jean P. Allen of Norfolk; and four grandchildren, Dana N. Seegers and Shane N. Seegers, both of Virginia Beach, and Diana L. Cartwright and John Michael Cartwright II, both of Chesapeake.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Milford Rollins. The family will receive friends at 2636 Roundtree Circle, Chesapeake, from 6 to 9 p.m. today. Altmeyer Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 360 Southport Circle, Virginia Beach, Va. 23452.
