U.S. Rep. Eva Clayton, a Democrat from the 1st District, and eight of her freshman women congressional colleagues will visit Fayetteville on Saturday as part of Clayton's re-election campaign.
The congresswomen - U.S. Reps. Leslie Byrne, D-Va.; Maria Cantwell, D-Wash.; Anna Eshoo, D-Calif.; Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y; Cynthia McKinney, D-Ga.; Carrie Meek, D-Fla.; Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Calif.; and Lynne Woolsey, D-Calif. - will participate in a full day of events beginning with a luncheon focusing on women's health care issues.
``Everyone is aware of the issues surrounding health care reform and my colleagues and I welcome the opportunity to share information about the congressional process as well as solicit input from local citizens,'' Clayton said of the visit.
Following lunch, the group will visit a series of locations around Fayetteville, concluding with a rally and dinner at the Charlie Rose Agri-Expo Center.
``We are all excited to have the opportunity to visit North Carolina with Congresswoman Clayton,'' said Byrne. ``She has truly represented the constituents of the 1st Congressional District forcefully and effectively during her first term and we all hope she remains in Congress for years to come.''
Clayton and Byrne were two of 24 freshmen women elected to Congress in 1992 - the largest class of freshmen women to be elected to Congress in history.
The nine-member delegation will be the largest group of congresswomen ever to visit North Carolina at one time, according to Clayton's office. by CNB
