WOMAN CHARGED IN ROBBERY

Police arrested a 26-year-old woman Wednesday and charged her with robbing the Commerce Bank in the 500 block of Crawford St.

Jimmy Ennis, spokesman for the Portsmouth Police Department, identified the suspect as Gaye M. Garring, 26, of the 1000 block of County St. .

Ennis said that a woman walked into the bank at about 1 p.m. and handed a note demanding money to a teller. After being given an undisclosed amount of cash, the woman ran north on Crawford Street, Ennis said.

Ten minutes later, Garring was arrested in the 900 block of County St. near the Chesnut Street intersection by police who were patrolling the area, Ennis said.

It was the second bank robbery in two days. Two men were arrested Tuesday in Suffolk and charged with robbing the First Union Bank in the 600 block of Loudon Ave. in Portsmouth.

Police charged two Suffolk men: George Carroll, 34, of the 1000 block of Cogic Square; and Jerome Walker, 54, of the 100 block of S. Fifth St. They were both charged with robbery, use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Two men robbed the bank at about 2:06 p.m. Tuesday, Ennis said. They escaped in a blue Mercury and later were apprehended after they were stopped at about 3:45 p.m. on Wilroy Road in Suffolk. Police recovered some cash and a handgun.
