TITLE GAME MATCHUPS ARE SET FOR TIDEWATER SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

The stage is now set for area softball bragging rights, as men's and women's preliminary action in the 13th annual Tidewater Softball Tournament was completed Wednesday at Greenbrier Park and Indian River High.

Church and coed divisions held their quarterfinal and semifinal games Tuesday.

All finals will be played Friday at Greenbrier Park - with church and coed action at 7 p.m., followed by men and women at 9 p.m. During intermission, there will be a home run contest for players from the men's and church divisions, and an accuracy hitting contest for women from the coed and women's divisions.

Norfolk city champion Clancy's and Portsmouth winner Harrison's Moving and Storage advanced to Friday's men's championship.

Clancy's showed its power in a 16-4 quarterfinal victory over B.W. Core Supply of Chesapeake, then had its hands full in a 35-28 home run derby victory over Tile Magic of Virginia Beach in the semis - the tournament's best game so far.

Clancy's hit 14 over the 300-foot fence at Greenbrier No. 1 in that contest, while Tile Magic had 10. Kenny Kirby of Clancy's and Kevin Lane of Tile Magic both hit four home runs and had 11 RBIs in the contest. Both had a grand slam.

``We knew they were going to give us a good game,'' Clancy's coach Alex Tatem said. ``We knew we had to come to play.''

Harrison's wasn't quite up to its usual power-hitting self in advancing to the final with a 17-12 victory over the Warriors of Norfolk and a 15-11 victory over the VMS Hitmen of Chesapeake.

The women's title game will pit Beach champion Superior/Hudgins against Chesapeake winner D.C. Controllers.

Superior/Hudgins defeated the Chesapeake Angels, 19-6, and P.J.'s Elite of Portsmouth, 16-6, to make the final. The D.C. Controllers - who have made the Tidewaters seven of the last eight years - defeated New Generation of Portsmouth, 4-2, and Bay Area Carpet of Virginia Beach, 14-12, to make the final.

Superior/Hudgins of Virginia Beach will face Norfolk's Bad Company in the coed final, while the church championship will feature Chesapeake teams Bethel Baptist and Mt. Pleasant Mennonite. MEMO: Ricky Bailey contributed to this story.
