David Abbott has decided to stay at Green Run.
The Beach District baseball player of the year and standout wide receiver had contemplated attending Ocean Lakes and even practiced one day with the Dolphins football team before deciding Thursday to stay with the Stallions.
``It was a hard choice for me at first,'' he said. ``But all my friends are here and (Green Run) has the chance to go really far this season in football and baseball.''
Among some of the appeal of attending Ocean Lakes was former Green Run coach Gary Spedden and some of the Stallions baseball players. Spedden is the new baseball coach at Ocean Lakes and some of his former players were going to go to the new school with him.
Then there was the chance to start at quarterback, a position Abbott plays as a backup at Green Run.
``But we've talked and we're all staying right here at Green Run,'' Abbott said of his teammates. ``They were going to go where I went. They had a good block schedule for classes at Ocean Lakes that I think would have helped prepare me better for college. And with my last name, I would have been the first person to graduate from the school.
``But I don't know how happy I would have been.''
Green Run coach Elisha ``Cadillac'' Harris, at first shocked to hear that Abbott had been practicing with the Dolphins, is plenty happy.
``I'm very pleased,'' Harris said. ``David is a very important part of the puzzle to our success here at Green Run.'' ILLUSTRATION: Davis Abbott had practiced for one day with the Ocean Lakes
