A double play took the Toledo Mud Hens out of a potential big inning Friday night and gave the game to the Tides.
With one out and runners on first and second in the ninth, Toledo's John Flaherty struck out on a 3-2 pitch. The runners were going, and Bobby Higginson was easily caught stealing at third by Norfolk catcher Joe Kmak to end the game and give the Tides a 3-2 win.
``The thinking was, we got to a 3-2 count, and we thought if (Tides pitcher Mike) Cook went to his breaking ball, we'd have a chance to steal third, and if he threw the fastball, which Flaherty has seen three or four times on that at-bat, he'd put it in play,'' Toledo manager Larry Parrish said.
Norfolk's Dave Telgheder (8-9) recorded another good outing against the Mud Hens. Telgheder, who was 2-1 with a 2.11 earned-run average against Toledo before Friday night, gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings. In 28 1/3 innings against the Mud Hens, he has allowed 22 hits.
``Telgheder gets everything over,'' Parrish said. ``He can throw all his pitches for strikes.''
Cook pitched the final two innings, earning his 14th save when he got out of the ninth-inning jam.
Norfolk tied the game 1-1 in the fourth and went ahead in the fifth. In the fourth, Jim Vatcher drew a leadoff walk and scored when Aaron Ledesma lined to shallow right. A sliding Rudy Pemberton just missed the catch, and the ball caromed off his knee and into the gap, allowing Ledesma to advance to third, where he was stranded.
The Tides went back on top when Doug Dascenzo, an unlikely power hitter, hit his third home run of the year for a 3-2 Tides lead in the eighth. ILLUSTRATION: BOX SCORE
