RECREATION NOTEBOOK

NEW LINKS MAN: Steve Shields became the city's golf course administrator April 16. Shields came to the Beach from a similar post in Lubbock, Texas. He spent eight years in the golf-mad Lone Star state.

A native of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Shields played college golf for Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, N.M.

``I've been involved in golf for 21 years,'' said Shields, who also said he plays every time he gets the chance.

Shields and his staff of about 25-30 people are responsible for the three city courses at Kempsville Greens, Bow Creek and Red Wing.

Steve and his wife, Julie, and their two daughters, Lauren, 10, and Rachel, 7, are enjoying life on the ocean after living in mid-America for so long.

CARE ON COURSE: The city will host its 4th Annual CARE Golf Tournament on Friday, August 19. CARE, which stands for Community Action Resource Empowerment, targets high-risk, low-income neighborhoods to assist them in fighting drug problems and crime.

Shannon Cox of Parks and Recreation said: ``We have 36 foursomes signed up to play (as of August 1) and 16 more on the waiting list. I'm pleased. That's a good problem to have.''

The event will be held at Red Wing Golf Course, and the teams will tee off in a shotgun start at 8 a.m. A lunch/social hour will follow play at 1 p.m.

Cox said the goal this year is to reach $1,000. Players from city departments such as police, fire, utilities, library and social services, as well as individuals from the private sector combine for the worthy effort.

LIFEGUARD CHALLENGE RESULTS: The 2nd Annual Lifeguard Challenge was held July 10 at the Princess Anne Community Recreation Center.

Ten teams from Norfolk, Chesapeake and, of course, Virginia Beach, competed in five events: three-guard relay, two-guard deep-water rescue, three-guard brick tow relay, lifeguard-carry relay and individual swim.

The Ocean View team finished first in the overall competition, followed by teams from the Princess Anne and Bayside recreation centers in second and third. Kempsville's team tied for fifth. Great Neck finished ninth and Bow Creek 10th.

The Virginia Beach teams are listed below:

Princess Anne: Melinda Fuller, Cisco Liuzzi, Frank Marchione

Bayside: Shannon Pope, Rick Jones, Carla Nixon

Kempsville: Zack Bissell, Scott Pointer, Heather Stockho

Bow Creek: Collin Kenyon, Bill Schmidt, Heidi Hodapp

Great Neck: Ken Caten, Chad Solis, Michelle Laird. by CNB
