I am compelled to correct an inaccuracy in the article regarding action taken by City Council last week concerning parking for Virginia Beach residents. The entire Council voted unanimously to lower parking fees at the 4th, 19th and 25th Street oceanfront municipal lots to $1 after 5 p.m. for our citizens, not by the 8-3 vote that was reported.
In fact, much of the discussion involved lowering the daytime fees as well, which resulted in direction to the staff to examine reduced daytime rates for our residents for next season and converting our municipal lots to an hourly rate structure. Parking at these lots is free to all from Oct. 1 to May 1.
Earlier this year, Council also approved reduced fees for residents (to $1 all day) at the Little Island parking lots and free parking at the Croatan lot. These pilot programs are aimed at giving Virginia Beach citizens a break and encouraging the use of our various beach areas by our local citizens.
All 11 members of Council are committed to providing safe, affordable parking for our citizens and will continue our efforts to do so, as evidenced by our recent actions.
