CRIME LINE

Local police are asking public assistance in solving these cases:

NORFOLK

Police are searching for a man wanted for an attempted robbery. His weapon of choice has police concerned, and they would like to apprehend him before he strikes again.

On Thursday, Aug. 4, at 8:40 a.m., a man entered the Virginia Check Cashing office at 6115 Sewells Point Road. As he approached the counter, he placed what appeared to be a bomb in the cashier's window. He then demanded that the cashier place money in a bag or the device would explode in several minutes.

The cashier was so scared she fled to the rear of the business and the would-be robber left without the money. He took the device with him.

The suspect is described as black, about 27 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 160 pounds. He had a light complexion and a light beard. The man was wearing a black suit, a white shirt and sunglasses.

PORTSMOUTH

On Wednesday, July 27, a woman had just left the High's Ice Cream store in the 5700 block of Churchland Blvd. when she was approached from behind and struck in the head.

Her attacker took the woman's pocketbook and fled, running behind the store. The victim had very little money in the pocketbook, but it did contain an ATM card.

Shortly after the robbery, the thief used the card at two local banks and made cash withdrawals. The thief, along with an accomplice, was photographed by video cameras at both locations.

VIRGINIA BEACH

On Thursday, June 23, shortly after midnight, a 30-year-old man was getting into his car at Weblin Drive near Baker Road when he was approached by three young men.

One of the men had a gun and forced the victim out of his car, onto the ground and stole his wallet. Two of the men got into the victim's car and drove away. The third robber ran.

The car, a dark green 1994 Ford Taurus, was abandoned a short distance away on Justin Court.

The three men police are looking for are described as black and in their late teens or early 20s. The gunman is described as being about 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, with dreadlocks and a slight beard and mustache.

CHESAPEAKE

On July 15, Linwood Freeman, 72, was at a friend's house when he heard a knock on the door. He answered the door and then, police believe, an assailant demanded money.

After exchanging words, Freeman was shot and killed.

Police have identified a suspect, Randolph Carr, 19. He is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, 150 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a mustache.

Carr is known to frequent the Ingleside, Diggs Park and Oak Leaf sections of Norfolk.

Investigators have interviewed several people concerning this vandalism, but no charges have been placed against anyone at this time.

On Aug. 9, at 9:45 a.m., a man entered the Bay Savings Bank at 217 Fox Hill Road and handed the teller a note demanding money. During the robbery, the man kept his right hand in a pocket of his hooded, pullover shirt.

A bank surveillance camera recorded the robbery.
