Eddie Wolcott Jr. of Norfolk withstood strong, gusty winds to grab two firsts and a second and capture the Hampton One Design national sailing championship Sunday on the Choptank River.
Kim Logan, a former member of the Old Dominion sailing team, crewed for Wolcott, who took the first two heats and then placed second to Latane Montague of Alexandria in the final race.
Bill Cofer of Virginia Beach, the defending champion, came in second overall, and Montague took third. Kevin Hanna of Seaford, Va., finished fourth, and Scott Wolff of Virginia Beach was fifth.
Bill Dougherty of Newport News won the sportsmanship trophy, and Jeff Case of Virginia Beach garnered the novice trophy for finishing highest among first-year sailors. T.J. Brockenbrough Jr. of Norfolk was awarded the broken rudder trophy for overcoming various obstacles to come in seventh.
Members elected Cofer commodore, Jack Rosemere of Cambridge vice commodore and Brockenbrough secretary. Wolcott was re-elected treasurer.
