WITH BASEBALL ON STRIKE, THE ``GRAND SLAMS'' ARE AT SEA

Billfish have staged a spectacular August showing off Virginia Beach in the past few days, with at least 40 big blue marlin caught and released since Wednesday.

Catches have included two ``grand slams,'' the term when one boat catches a white marlin, a blue marlin and a sailfish in the same day.

The Pursuer, a private boat owned by Ray Temple, was the first to turn the trick. The slam was scored Wednesday by one angler, Joe Costner of Virginia Beach. Two other blue marlin were also caught from the boat the same day. All five fish were released.

Then the Tom Cat, a private boat owned by Tom Shotton of Virginia Beach, scored a grand slam Friday, when its anglers released two blues, two whites and a sailfish. Again, the slam was scored by one angler, Larry Davenport of Virginia Beach.

Boats sailing from Oregon Inlet, south of Nags Head, also shared in the excitement.

The Temptress, a charter boat skippered by Chip Schafer, scored a double grand slam, releasing two blues, two whites and two sails. That was Friday, when Paul Spencer on the Sizzler, another Oregon Inlet charter boat, missed a double slam by a single sailfish.

Recent catches by Virginia boats have also included two new leaders in the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament. One was a 64-pound dolphin, caught by Walt Schendel of Virginia Beach. He was aboard the charter boat High Hopes. The other was a 67 1/2-pound wahoo pulled aboard the Striker II by F.M. Kampfmueller of Virginia Beach.
