Durant Banks Walston Sr., 77, of the 3100 block of S. Battlefield Blvd., died Saturday, Aug. 13, 1994, in Chesapeake General Hospital. Mr. Walston was born in Weeksville, N.C., in 1917. He came to Old Norfolk County as a young boy some 67 years ago, where he had called the settlement of Hickory home. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard with over 30 years of service. Mr. Walston was a member of Hickory United Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Hickory Ruritan Club.
Survivors are his wife of 55 years, Geneva D. Walston; a son, D.B. Walston Jr.; daughter-in-law, Mary Love Walston of Chesterfield County, Va.; a daughter, Sharon Walston Etzell; son-in-law, Stephen M. Etzell, both of Chesapeake; two brothers, John C. Walston of Norfolk and James W. Walston of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Matthew and Laura Etzell, both of Chesapeake and Craig and Caryn Walston, both of Chesterfield County, Va.
Mr. Walston will be missed by neighbors and friends who remember the hot summer days he would pull his vegetable wagon out in front of his home to sell his wonderful vegetables. He was considered a master gardener.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Hickory United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Francis Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Moyock Memorial Park, Moyock, N.C. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Twiford Funeral Home Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge.
