JULIA H. HAWKINS

Julia ``Judy'' Hoffler Hawkins, 71, died Aug. 14, 1994, at her home.

Mrs. Hawkins was born in Portsmouth on Feb. 11, 1923. She taught for the Portsmouth Public Schools and chaired the English Department at Cradock High School. A graduate of James Madison University, she obtained her master's degree from Old Dominion University.

She was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for more than 30 years. She served as president of the Monumental Women's Society, and was past president of the board of the Wesley Community Center. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star; The Wednesday Book Study Club; and a former member of The Students Club.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald O. Hawkins Sr.; a daughter, Susan L. Hawkins of Portsmouth; two sons, Donald O. Hawkins Jr. of Virginia Beach; Andrew C. Hawkins of Portsmouth; a sister, Gloria Fariss of Florida; and four grandsons.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Monumental United Methodist Church, Dinwiddie Street, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Foster Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to Monumental United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, or Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Norfolk.
