HONORS AND AWARDS

POND RECEIVES DEGREE: Douglas Wesley Pond recently received a master's degree in statistics from Virginia Tech.

Pond received his bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech in 1992.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Pond Jr. of Suffolk.

STROPLE EARNS SCHOLARSHIP: Jennifer A. Strople recently began her studies at medical school at the University of Alabama-Birmingham on a $5,000 scholarship, which is renewable annually.

Strople graduated this year from the University of Virginia with a degree in biochemistry. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

She is the daughter of Raymond H. and Elaine Strople of Bennetts Creek, Suffolk, and Armstrong Strople of Atlanta.

SLAUGHTER AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP: Clarence E. Slaughter Jr. was recently awarded a $14,000 Harriet S. Tubman scholarship and an $8,000 stipend to pursue a master's degree and teaching certification in social work at Washington University in St. Louis.

A 1976 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, Slaughter is a resident of Seattle. He graduated from the University of Washington Tacoma in June.

While in college, Slaughter was president of the Black Student Union. He also worked full-time at the Seattle Veterans Medical Center in outpatient services.

Slaughter is the son of Clarence and Delois Slaughter of Suffolk.

DORSEY COMPLETES SUMMER SEMESTER: Brian Ross Dorsey, a 1994 graduate of Isle of Wight Academy, has completed a summer semester of five credit hours at Louisburg College, Louisburg, N.C., with a grade-point average of 3.40.

Dorsey will return to Louisburg for the fall semester as a freshman.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter L. Bailey of Carrollton.

PARKER APPOINTED BY GOVERNOR: Jane Elliott Parker, Ed.D., of Charlottesville, has been appointed by Gov. George Allen to serve on the Regional Economic Development Advisory Council for District 8, which covers Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson.

The council will work with state government, planning districts and existing local and regional economic development organizations. She also will be involved with small business development centers and both four-year and community colleges.

Regional Economic Development Advisory Councils will mean increased local access and input into Virginia's economic policies and strategies, and they will play a major role in the ongoing evolution of ``Vision Virginia,'' a new statewide strategic economic development planning process.

Parker is a graduate of James Madison University and the University of Virginia. She is a principal in the consulting firm of Robbins, Parker and Associates Inc.
