MARLINS SIGN TIDEWATER ACADEMY GRAD

KIP WEST, 18-year-old graduate of Tidewater Academy in Wakefield, has signed a baseball contract with the Florida Marlins.

The 6-1, 200-pound first baseman batted .471 and slugged four home runs for Tidewater Academy, which finished 9-6 for his senior season. He also played for Surry Post 160, which took third in the American Legion district.

A native of Wakefield, West played four years for Tidewater Academy, and was planning to attend a junior college in Baltimore this fall. Although the New York Mets and the Baltimore Orioles showed interest in West, the Marlins signed him July 30.

He is working out, staying in shape and will work in Wakefield until he reports to Miami for spring training in March. West will go to extended spring training and probably be assigned to the Marlins' Rookie League team next summer, according to his father, Charles West.

``We're thrilled for him, especially since he comes from a small community and went to a small private school,'' West said. ``A lot of credit goes to the coaches that Kip had while he was growing up.''

The elder West specifically mentioned Jim Pedigo of Tidewater Academy, Paul Rogers, a youth baseball coach, and Bill Warren, the American Legion coach.

GRID CLINIC POSTPONED: The fourth annual youth football coaches clinic, scheduled Aug. 4, was postponed until Sept. 17. But Jerry Varacallo, Nansemond River High's head football coach, said he probably will not be able to be a speaker then because of other commitments.

``It turned out they had more speakers than coaches,'' Varacallo said. ``So it was postponed.''

Sponsored by the Tidewater Sharks football team, the clinic was slated for the Center for Effective Learning Stadium in Virginia Beach. Unfortunately, many of the youth leagues had not met yet and the word had not gotten out about the free clinic.

COACHING CHANGES: Stan Pope, former athletic director at Sussex Central High, has been promoted to assistant principal at the school. Replacing him as athletic director is Stan Latham who has been an assistant football for 14 years.

Latham also was head baseball coach for 12 years, but he dropped that task last year. However, he will continue working with the football program in addition to his A.D. duties.

Dwight Reagan, the head football coach, has been transferred to the middle school but will continue to direct the varsity.

At Surry County High, Willie Gillus replaces Willie Williamson as head football coach. Williamson had taken Bill Miller's place last year temporarily.

BALTIMORE CUTS GOODMAN: Mike Gathagan, spokesman for Baltimore's Canadian Football League, says Bobby Goodman, formerly of Suffolk, was released from training camp in late June.

One report said the former Virginia signal caller had suffered a pulled hamstring, but Gathagan said the injury had nothing to do with Goodman's release.

``Quite frankly, he was the fifth-best quarterback out of five candidates,'' Gathagan said. ``He was a good quarterback, but our quarterback situation was one of our strong points.

``He was a good fifth man to have, but five was too many.''

FRANKLIN BOWL WINNERS: Bill and Darlene Mobley fired a 622 series to capture the Scotch doubles competition at the Franklin Bowl last week. Al Ward and Connie Carpenter placed second with a 613 while Mark and Shelly Fetherolf took third with a 598.
