BOYCE G. WHITLEY

Boyce Greene Whitley died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1994, at the age of 83.

Mr. Whitley was born in Union County, N.C., near Monroe and Charlotte. After graduating from Unionville High School he married Eunice Taylor. In addition to their farming operation, Mr. Whitley entered the construction field.

In 1941 Mr. Whitley moved his family to Norfolk and began civil service employment at the Naval Operations Base. He later moved to the Dam Neck Air Defense Training Center in 1950, where he was a maintenance foreman.

Mr. Whitley served in the North Carolina and the Virginia National Guards as a sergeant in field artillery. He served the community as a member of the Tanner's Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He advanced to lieutenant as a firefighter and EMS technician. He was a member of the Virginia Heights Baptist Church. Mr. Whitley was a member of the Ocean View Masonic Lodge (NU)335 AF & AM and the Norview High School Athletic Booster Club.

Mr. Whitley retired from civil service in 1976 and from Henry, Hanson, Tucker Real Estate Sales in July of this year.

Boyce Whitley is survived by his wife, Eunice Pauline Whitley of Norfolk; sons, Joel Whitley of Williamsburg and Kenneth Whitley of Norfolk. He had four grandchildren, Pamela Hexter of Frederick, Md., Kevin Whitley of Norfolk, David Whitley of Williamsburg and Tonya Whitley of Norfolk. Also he is survived by two great-grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Hexter of Frederick, Md.; and four brothers, J.D. Whitley, Norman Whitley, Ney Whitley and Clifford Whitley, all of Monroe, N.C.; and three sisters, Maxine Barbee of Monroe, N.C., Ruth Barbee of Rockingham, N.C., and Ora Lee Baucom of Orangeburg, S.C.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. The funeral will be held at the funeral home chapel Friday at 1:30 p.m. by Dr. Linwood Peterson and the Rev. Melvin Hughes. Expressions of sympathy should be forwarded to Hospice of Sentara or other hospice programs. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, where Masonic rites will be accorded at the graveside.
