Lake Taylor basketball coach Jarrell Wilkerson apparently has landed a job as an assistant coach at Hampton University, where he would replace former assistant Bobby Dandridge.
But Hampton officials said they can't make an announcement until some loose ends are tied.
``Right now it is unofficial,'' Hampton coach Malcolm ``Zeke'' Avery said. ``I would hate to say something that would hinder the process.''
One holdup is that Wilkerson has yet to resign from Lake Taylor, athletic director Bert Harrell said.
``We have people applying for the job and it's not open yet,'' Harrell said.
Wilkerson could not be reached for comment.
A Smithfield native, Wilkerson has been at Lake Taylor three years. He spent a year as girls coach, then compiled a 19-24 record in two years as boys coach.
Wilkerson came to Lake Taylor from Norfolk State, where he was an assistant coach for nine years. He played at Norfolk State from 1975 to '79.
The Lake Taylor job will be advertised once it becomes vacant, Harrell said. He said he may draw from the pool of applicants who didn't get the job at Norview that went to Darnell Miller. Among them was Bill Chambers, the head coach at North Carolina Wesleyan and a former player at North Carolina. by CNB
