The C-17 Globemaster III, the newest cargo and transport aircraft in

the U.S. Air Force's Air Mobility Command, rests at Oceana Naval Air

Station in Virginia Beach Friday following a training flight. The

C-17 Globemaster III is a four-engine McDonnell Douglas transport

designed to meet requirements for future airlift of combat forces

and delivery of large Army equipment. The key capability is direct

delivery from the continental United States to small airfields

overseas. Today's primary airlifter, the C-141 Starlifter, is

nearing the end of its service life, with an average age of 27

years.
