The C-17 Globemaster III, the newest cargo and transport aircraft in
the U.S. Air Force's Air Mobility Command, rests at Oceana Naval Air
Station in Virginia Beach Friday following a training flight. The
C-17 Globemaster III is a four-engine McDonnell Douglas transport
designed to meet requirements for future airlift of combat forces
and delivery of large Army equipment. The key capability is direct
delivery from the continental United States to small airfields
overseas. Today's primary airlifter, the C-141 Starlifter, is
nearing the end of its service life, with an average age of 27
years.
