George Warner grew a cucumber so big he wants to save the seeds to see if they produce giant offspring.
But it's not like he can't buy new seeds. He wins a $25 gift certificate by winning the Most Humongous in the Incredible Vegetable Contest.
Warner, who lives in the first block of Prospect Parkway in Cradock, spurred this year's contest with his cuke, which weighed in at four pounds and measured 21 inches.
Raylin Neblitt of the 2200 block of Peach St. wins a $25 gift certificate for Most Artistic with a pair of ``twin'' red peppers resembling jester's feet. The peppers were submitted by her father, Clem Neblitt.
The All-Around Most Bizarre vegetable was a cucumber with a gimmick. The cuke was grown inside an empty, plastic two-liter bottle by A.W. and Marie Outten of the first block of Farragut St.
``Actually, it was forced,'' Marie Outten acknowledges, ``because we inserted the cuke into the bottle while still small and it grew inside.''
But a little gardening creativity didn't get in the way of the bizarre. They too will receive a $25 gift certificate from Portsmouth garden centers. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by MARK MITCHELL
