State Police have identified a man killed in a one-car accident on Interstate 64 Saturday morning as 23-year-old Robert T. Gates, a sailor stationed aboard the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt.
Gates ran his 1989 Chevrolet Blazer off the left side of the Hampton Roads Center Parkway exit ramp at about 3 or 4 a.m., police said. The accident was reported at 7 a.m. by an anonymous caller. Gates was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, Gates' truck went 114 feet down a steep, grassy embankment and rolled over at least once. Gates, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown into the back seat and through a side window.
State Police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said police suspect alcohol was involved.
Police think Gates had spent much of the evening at Mitty's night club in Newport News.
