JOHN M. KUSIAK

John M. Kusiak, 75, of Brockway Road, died suddenly on Sunday at Winchester Hospital in Winchester, Mass.

He was born September 17, 1918, in Exeter, N.H., the son of Josef and Alma (Charbonneau) Kusiak. Lieutenant Colonel Kusiak had a distinguished military career spanning 26 years with the 11th Battalion of the 1st Marine Division. He was the Chief of Staff effecting the surrendering of the Bolling Islands in the South Pacific during World War II. Lieutenant Colonel Kusiak also saw action during the Korean War. He retired from the military in 1964 and then went to work at the Virignian-Pilot/Ledger-Star in Norfolk, Va., as the supervisor of newsprint. He retired from there in 1980.

He was a member of the Ryan Club, a Catholic professional businessman's club, the Hanover Lions Club, and was a communicant of St. Denis Catholic Church of Hanover.

He is survived by his wife, Helena ``Patsy'' Kusiak of Hanover; three daughters, Kathleen Nowitzky of Norfolk, Mary-Jane Murrow of Baltimore and Patricia C. Webb of Lynchburg, Va.; four sons, Peter M. and John M. Jr., both of Norfolk, Philip F. of Jamestown, N.C., and Thomas J. of Richmond; three sisters, Genieve Koenig of North Andover, Mass., Eugenia Kelley of Woburn, Mass., and Agnas Patch of Cape Coral, Fla.; a brother, Joseph W. Kusiak of Nashua, N.H.; 20 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Denis Catholic Church of Hanover. Burial with full military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Va. A reception will follow burial at 1705 Park Ave. in Richmond, Va.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Father Abram Ryan Endowment Fund, c/o the Ryan Club, 4856 Haygood Drive, Virginia Beach, Va. 23455.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, N.H.
