An Ohio man drowned and his wife was pulled from rough surf near the Cape Hatteras lighthouse at about 4:30 p.m. Monday, National Park Service spokesman Robert Woody said.
The man, 44, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Hatteras Island Medical Center. His wife, 41, was taken to a Chesapeake, Va., hospital and reported to be in fair and stable condition. Their names were not released.
Woody said the couple were swimming about 150 yards offshore in waves of about 5 feet when the woman apparently got in trouble. Her husband tried to save her, but was swept away.
The Hatteras Island Rescue Squad sent a boat and wave rider and brought the woman to shore.
