The staff members at the American Association of Retired Persons have endorsed the socialized medical care reform bill backed by President Clinton. This is their right. But it must be understood that they represent only themselves, not the many millions of AARP members. The majority of AARP members oppose socialized medical care.
I am a member of AARP because it offers several excellent services, including the best medi-gap insurance on the market and a first-rate pharmacy service. I didn't sign up with AARP out of agreement with its odd political views. While it is fine with me if the staff members lobby Congress, I draw the line when they falsely say they are representing me and the rest of the members. Certainly, they have never polled us for our views on this or on any other issue. It is morally wrong for them, then, to go off to Washington and presume to speak on our behalf.
