HOMICIDE RECORD FALLS IN VA. BEACH

A 27-year-old out-of-state trucker became the city's 30th homicide victim of 1994 early today, breaking a record set in 1991 for most homicides in a year.

The truck driver and a friend, who were not immediately identified, were apparently buying drugs on Burton Station Road off Northampton Boulevard around midnight when both were shot, police said.

The 27-year-old truck driver died at the scene, but his companion, a 39-year-old truck driver, ran to a nearby residence and the resident called police. The wounded trucker was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. His injuries do not appear life-threatening.

Police released no suspect information, but said the murder was drug-related. The homicide is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 427-0000.
