GETTING IN PEAK SHAPE

It's that time of the year.

``Thank goodness,'' say football fans, many of whom don't like baseball anyhow.

High school football will have a few new coaches, several schedule changes and a bunch of new looks on offense and defense. And there will be many new players.

However, the two-a-days have been just as hard. The sweat has been pouring just as hard as the area's afternoon showers. The muscles are finally loosening up, and the bruises are turning from black and blue to yellow.

Conditioning drills are similar as coaches try to bring their charges up to peak physical shape. Then there are the play drills, films, more drills, meetings and more drills.

Friday nights - and some Saturday afternoons - are major happenings in most communities. What happens then will provide conversation in area coffee shops for the following week.

The stadiums will soon be ablaze with lights and the sounds of high school bands. But the sounds that most people are listening for will be the thump or thud and groan when a tackler introduces himself to a runner. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photos by Michael Kestner

practice at the Courtland field where he soon will find some.

Meanwhile, it's ``let's pretend'' as he undergoes play drills.
