So it doesn't have a lighthouse, quintessential symbol of Virginia Beach to its longtime residents. But the city license plate that council approved Tuesday night doesn't have a blue worm, either - that quintessential symbol of recent dissension in the city. Designed by students at the Virginia Beach Vocational Technical Education Center - the first nice extra about this plate - it does have dolphins, a sun, waves and the words ``Virginia Beach'' in print big enough to read without following too, too close.
The second nice extra is that after the first thousand plates, the city gets back $15 of the $25 the special plate costs. That revenue from the first year will go to programs at the Virginia Marine Science Museum. Other worthwhile city programs ought to get a share in succeeding years.
Now if they can only wise up the license-plate maker who keeps printing the numeral 1 for the letter I, as in F1RE TRK . . . by CNB
