The Sheriff's Department is warning residents about a possible telephone scam that is using the department's name to collect money.
Capt. Linda Jacocks, spokeswoman for the department, said this week that an apparent scam artist is phoning city residents. The caller asks for money to benefit the Sheriff's Department, or a youth drug-prevention program called DARE.
The caller typically asks residents for their addresses so he can come by in person to collect the cash or check, Jacocks said. Sometimes, the caller asks the resident to leave a check in the mailbox or in the door so he can pick it up.
Jacocks said the caller may be targeting elderly residents. She said neither the Sheriff's Department nor the DARE program is soliciting contributions by telephone.
