CRASH ON 264 KILLS DRIVER WHO STOPPED TO OFFER HELP

A 30-year-old man was killed early Thursday morning when he was struck by a car as he attempted to help the driver of a vehicle stopped in a westbound lane of Interstate 264.

The victim, Paul Chereskin, 30, of the 500 block of Mayflower Road, was headed home in his 1987 Ford pickup truck about 2:30 a.m. from his job in Virginia Beach, according to Howard Chereskin, his father.

Police said Chereskin noticed a 1982 Chrysler LeBaron stopped in a traffic lane near the Campostella exit. The driver of the stalled car, Joseph M. DaSilva, 30, of Virginia Beach, appeared to be slumped over the steering wheel.

Chereskin stopped his car on the shoulder and got out to investigate, police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said.

Witnesses told police Chereskin walked to the LeBaron and attempted to rouse DaSilva, Van Dame said. A Honda Accord, driven by Shawn McGarrell, 21, of Norfolk, then hit the LeBaron, Chereskin and the pickup truck.

Chereskin was declared dead at the scene, Van Dame said.

DaSilva was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for observation and released. He was charged with reckless driving.

McGarrell was uninjured.
