CAMDEN AND EDENTON OVERWHELM IN OPENERS

Two Albemarle area teams opened up the North Carolina high school football regular season with impressive victories. As a matter of fact, it was Albemarle area 109, other areas 0.

Camden County, which had won just one game in two previous seasons under head coach Scott Jones, shocked a short-handed Mattamuskeet team 60-0.

Edenton-Holmes, missing 27 of 32 players from last year, bombed Columbia 49-0.

To understand the magnitude of Camden's win, recall that the Bruins scored just 49 points the entire 1992 season.

``Getting in the end zone that year was like a moral victory,'' Jones said.

Mattamuskeet played with just 15 players.

``They weren't very good. They were real weak and had a bunch of players that went both ways,'' Jones said. ``I don't know how much credibility we gain from a game like that because we have teams in the conference that are still good.''

One thing is for sure: Camden can put points on the board. Much of the offense revolved around senior quarterback Arderrick Wiggins, who scored three touchdowns rushing and passed for another.

``He had six carries for 130 yards,'' Jones said. ``Arderrick is what our whole offense is built around.''

Also performing well for the Bruins were running backs Eric Chamblee, Derek Burrus, Joel Taylor and T.J. Thornton.

Edenton head coach Jay Swicegood said that Columbia is also a young team.

``We overpowered them early. They made a lot of mistakes early,'' Swicegood said. ``In the second half we used our second string.''

Swicegood said a lot more came out of the win than the final score.

``We really had no fumbles or offsides penalties,'' he noted. ``It gives us the confidence going into the next game, and we got to see which kids can go better on offense and defense.'' by CNB
