Oliver North does sound almost too good to be true (letter, Aug. 21). He sounds as if he believes in the same common sense and everyday decency that lifts the faces and spirits of ordinary men everywhere.
That his deeds and promises often appear Dudley Do Rightish in contrast with those of our ilustrious Congress is no surprise. It is more a measure of the low esteem which politicians have so deservedly earned from the Amerian people in general.
However, Dudley Do Right never served in the jungles of Vietnam, and neither did Ted Kennedy. Dudley never faced a star chamber intent on persecuting him for serving the cause of freedom and his president.
North has risked his life, his family, and his sacred honor on America's behalf, and the only argument his critics can marshall is a half-truth. Since when is being robbed of the right to a fair trial a mere ``technicality''? That is why his conviction was overturned.
I will vote for Ollie North, not because I feel he can single-handedly right all the wrongs of Washington and its twisted, entrenched bureaucracy, but because I believe he will try.
