Suffolk's Parks and Recreation Department sponsored a tumbling and gymnastics camp at Birdsong Recreation Center this past week. The sessions served as a warm-up for the classes that will start Sept. 12.
Faye Tillery, recreation specialist, said that while the turnout was not as large as hoped the department would have the camp again next year. Kim Glenn, of Hampton's Gymnastics Inc., was the instructor for the morning sessions.
Children from 3 to 5 concentrated on the tumbling aspects and learned creative movement to enhance their hand-eye coordination and flexibility.
Older youngsters had a variety of equipment.
GUZZLERS SET TOURNEY: The Guzzlers' coed softball tourney was canceled due to lack of entries, but the team has scheduled a men's tournament for Sept. 10-11 at Cypress Field on Airport Road.
Only four teams entered the coed event, slated for Aug. 20-21, so officials canceled it, turned around and set the wheels in motion for a men's tourney. It will be double elimination and each team must bring a new softball.
Entry fee is $100 and proceeds will go toward helping the Guzzlers travel to the National Softball Association world tournament in Rock Hill, S.C., Sept. 16-18.
The Guzzlers tied for first in Suffolk's National League with Oakdale. Both had 17-2 records, but the Guzzlers captured the playoff game and went on to win the end-of-season tourney with a 5-0 mark.
They finished ninth in the state tourney held at Virginia Beach with a 3-2 record, qualifying for the NSA regional tourney, set for Burlington on Labor Day weekend, and the world tournament. Jim Clark's charges have played in 11 different tournaments around the state during the summer.
Second baseman Brian Wyatt is the team's leading hitter with a .728 average. Other top batters are first baseman Andy Chaney (.689), pitcher Rick Bower (.653), pitcher Kenny Davis (.613) and his twin brother outfielder Gerald (.605).

Heather Stewart, at left, struggles to get over the uneven parallel
bars during a gymnastics camp at Birdsong Recreation Center in
downtown Suffolk. But for the balance beam, above, she got a little
help from a friend, instructor Kim Glenn of Gymnastics Inc. of
Hampton. Meghan Elizabeth Brinkley, at right, had an easier go at
the uneven bars. Glenn gave her a hand - er, leg, - to climb on.
