GOP'S TYLER WAGES LONELY BID FOR CONGRESS

While Republican strategists and campaign funds are helping Walter Jones Jr., in the 3rd District Congressional race, Ted Tyler, the 1st Congressional District GOP candidate, is waging a lonely battle for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Tyler, a former mayor of Rich Square, lost a 1992 race against Democratic Rep. Eva Clayton of Warren County for the seat. Clayton became the first black and the first woman to go to Congress from North Carolina in nearly a century.

The 1992 1st District race was the first held after the General Assembly reapportioned voters to create a black majority.

Tyler, a pharmaceutical salesman, raised his own campaign money again this year.

``I'm getting more support than ever and I truly expect to surprise everybody on election day,'' Tyler said on Friday. by CNB
