Anybody got a coin?
Heads or tails, who's going to win the Beach District title this season?
It's a tossup.
This year's candidates will be First Colonial and Green Run.
Tailing just behind will be Bayside and Kempsville, with Princess Anne and Salem hot on their trail.
The rest of the pack will have to fend for themselves.
All of this, mind you, comes from football prognostication abilities that are suspect at best.
If you are new to these pages, let me fill you in.
Last year, I predicted Bayside to win the district title. Final outcome for the Marlins - fourth.
Kempsville was notched into second place. The Chiefs finished third. Hey, not bad for me.
I chose Green Run to finish third and they captured second. I'll take it.
Then there was Salem, which I said would take fourth. They finished fifth. Still, not too bad.
But here's where my talents really show.
I picked First Colonial to wander in at fifth and the Patriots go on and win the whole darned shooting match with only one district loss.
First Colonial showed its strength with a 41-point outburst in the second quarter of its game against Green Run.
The rest is history.
This season, I'm going to do better. Honest. No, really, don't laugh. I've got a handle on this stuff.
And I'm going to win the Lottery this Saturday night, too.
Alright, enough abuse. Here are my picks for this year with a short reason why.
But remember, don't take any of this to the bank.
FIRST COLONIAL
It's going to be close between the Patriots and Green Run, but I have to go with the odds here.
GREEN RUN
The stable is full in Stallions country and these horses can really run. Defense will be the only question.
BAYSIDE The Marlins can compete with anybody, but might not have the overall talent to vault past the top two.
KEMPSVILLE The Chiefs round out the elite four teams that can compete for the title, or at least a playoff spot.
PRINCESS ANNE The Cavaliers have definitely got the talent to join the upper group, but they should have probably done that last year. PA will have to prove itself this season.
SALEM Coach Billy McTyre says this could be the best team the Sun Devils have ever put on the field. But he adds that his squad still isn't where he wants it to be.
COX
The Falcons are probably in a rebuilding year, with young talent and young coaches. Cox could still manage to surprise a few people.
TALLWOOD After notching the school's first two victories last year, the Lions are looking to move up. Unfortunately, moving to the top of the Beach is most often a crawl.
KELLAM Another team with many hurdles to overcome. But the Knights won't repeat last year's 0-10 effort. They get a victory or two.
OCEAN LAKES New schools always have trouble at first in this city, although Green Run was the exception. Many talented players choose to use their senior option to stay at the school they've been at, and that's the case here. More freshmen and sophomores on this team than you could shake a stick at. by CNB
