POLICE RELEASE SKETCH OF MAN IN STUDENT'S ABDUCTION, ASSAULT

Police have released a sketch of the gunman who abducted and assaulted a 21-year-old Norfolk State University student last week. The man fled after the woman deliberately smashed her car into a truck.

The incident began about 2 a.m. Wednesday at Virginia Beach Boulevard and Park Avenue in Norfolk. Larry Hill, a police spokesman, said the victim had been talking on a pay phone when a man approached her as she returned to her car. He pulled a pistol and forced her to drive him toward Virginia Beach. He fondled the victim as she drove.

Apparently the man ordered the student to drive off Interstate 264 at Newtown Road, where the woman crashed her car into a newspaper delivery van. The wreck happened at 2:26 a.m. at Greenwich and Newtown roads.

The abductor, who was in the passenger seat, smashed his head into the windshield. He staggered from the wreck and eluded police. No one else was injured.

``We believe he has some sort of head injury, such as a laceration to his face or cuts due to the traffic accident when he hit the windshield,'' Hill said. ``He may have needed medical attention for that.''

Hill said there is a possibility the man lives in the Witchduck Road area where his scent was traced by a police dog, or near Park Avenue Virginia Beach Boulevard where the carjacking took place.

The man is described as black, 15 to 19 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 145 to 160 pounds with a medium brown complexion, acne on his cheeks and a gap in his upper teeth. He was wearing an old red baseball cap, a white T-shirt with black lettering, and beige shorts.
