MORTON E. MCCARTHY

Morton Everest McCarthy of Virginia Beach, died Aug. 27, 1994 in a local hospital.

Born Oct. 12, 1915, in New York City, he was raised in Norfolk. He attended school at St. Mary's Male Academy, Blair Junior High School and Maury High School, where he was (NU)1 on the Golf Team. During his junior year, he won the Norfolk City Amateur Golf Tournament in 1933 and repeated in 1935 and 1937. He won the Mason-Dixon Open, was the Middle-Atlantic Amateur Champion and was runner up in the North and South Tournament. He also won the Bel-Aire and Nassau Opens as a professional. In football, he played tackle at Maury, and made 3rd team All American High Schools. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. Mr. McCarthy turned pro-golfer for several years and then joined a foreign-car wholesale firm as an overseas purchaser. He was forced into retirement due to ill health in 1980.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia McCarthy Ariosto of Casper, Wyo.; a son, M.E. McCarthy Jr. of Spring Valley, Calif.; several grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He leaves behind a brother, R.E. ``Pat'' McCarthy of Virginia Beach.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, by the Rev. Michael Breslin. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad.
