Jennie Blizzard's dream is one step closer to reality.
``Writing for a newspaper is my dream job,'' said Jennie, 17.
``Money is not that important to me because my goal is not to become rich in my career,'' said the Surry County High School senior. ``It is to do something with my life I enjoy.''
Blizzard was one of 12 students statewide selected to participate in the 1994 Urban Journalism Workshop in July. The program for minority high school students interested in a journalism career is sponsored annually by Virginia Commonwealth University, the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and The Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Blizzard applied for admission to the workshop last winter. Before being accepted, she took several basic writing and editing tests.
During the two-week workshop, participants attended daily seminars designed to sharpen their interviewing and writing skills. The other parts of the days were spent publishing their own newspaper, The Voice.
Jennie's work and interest in journalism paid off at the end of the workshop with a $2,000 college scholarship from the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund. Although she can use the scholarship to study journalism at any school nationwide, she believes she will probably end up at VCU.
``I have always thought about journalism as a career,'' Jennie said. ``I feel like this workshop has helped me get a jump on what I want to do with life.
``Hopefully, I will be successful.'' ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by JOHN H. SHEALLY II
