MISCELLANEOUS

SPECIAL PROGRAM

A before- and after-school child care program is offered at every elementary school in the county.

The goal of the school-age child-care program is to provide a supervised environment in which children are exposed to skills that promote self-esteem, self-reliance, and responsibility through educationally, physically and socially oriented activities that are safe and fun. VOLUNTEERS

Persons interested in volunteering in any of the schools should contact principals who can provide them with information on individual school needs and applications. DISABILITY PROGRAMS

The county schools provide programs to serve all identified students with disabilities, ages 2 through 21. Handicapping conditions include the following:

Speech and language disabilities

Mental retardation

Serious emotional disturbance

Specific learning disabilities

orthopedic or other health impairments

Hearing impairment or deafness

Visual impairment or blindness

Autism

Traumatic brain injuries

Severe and profound disability

Multiple disabilities

Once identified, these students are served in accordance with their Individualized Educational Program (IEP) which is developed each year by school personnel and parents working together. As much as is beneficial, students are educated in the school they would normally attend in regular classes with supplemental assistance and services.

Parents and other interested in additional information concerning special education services may contact Dr. Patricia Harris at the educational services center.

Parents concerned that they may have a child in need of special education services for an educational disability should contact a principal and request a meeting of the Student Assistance Team. This team will work cooperatively with the home to determine the exact concerns that need to be addressed and may refer the student for further evaluation. ADULT EDUCATION

At Pruden Vocational-Technical Center, a regional adult education program has been formed called The Center for Lifelong Learning. It is sponsored by Suffolk City Public Schools and Isle of Wight County Public Schools.

The center's function is to meet the needs of all adults who wish to take classes for personal satisfaction, to improve basic skills or to learn a new vocation. Classes are offered throughout Suffolk and Isle of Wight County.

Final date for registration will be the date of the first classes, Sept. 19.
