JOHN L. DEAN

John Linwood ``Pat Lyon'' Dean, manager of B.F. King Funeral Home, died Aug. 22, 1994, in Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring.

Mr. Dean was born in New York City. He was a former member of St. John A.M.E. Church, Bute Street, Norfolk. At a very young age, he moved to Portsmouth where he grew up and attended the public schools. Upon his graduation from I.C. Norcom High School, he attended Hampton Institute, and Virginia Union University in Richmond. After volunteering and being discharged from the U.S. Army, he attended and graduated from Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia, Pa. He subsequently became manager of his stepfather's business, the B.F. King Funeral Home in Norfolk. Mr. Dean was a former member of the Norfolk Funeral Directors and Embalming Association. He was a member of I.C. Norcom Athletes and Norfolk State Spartan's Booster Club and SGI-USA. He was predeceased by his parents, Madge Dean King and John L. Dean Sr.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Gloria Lorette Clark of Los Angeles, Calif.; a son, Craig Lowell Dean of Takoma Park, Md.; two grandchildren, Lea Carroll Dean and Ryan Carroll Dean, both of Takoma Park; and a daughter-in-law, Ruthie Carroll Dean.

A memorial service will be conducted at noon Friday in Hale Funeral Home by the Rev. J.L. Kearney Sr. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 11:45 a.m.
