Bruce J. Neilson, 51, died Aug. 30, 1994.
He was professor of Marine Science, Emeritus, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, School of Marine Science, the College of William and Mary. He received his AB, MA and MSE degrees from Princeton University and his PhD from Johns Hopkins University. He was the author of numerous articles and reports on topics related to water quality and natural resource management issues. During his tenure at VIMS, he led the program in Environmental Engineering and directed the research program in Physical Oceanography. He worked closely with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Department of Health and the Marine Resources Commission. He helped lead a pioneering effort to establish the first endowed graduate fellowship at VIMS/SMS, the Matthew Fontaine Maury Fellowship Fund. He was a former chairman of the Gloucester County Democratic Committee and a delegate to the 1984 Democratic National Convention. He was a state director of Virginias For Justice; a friend of the New Life Metropolitan Community Church, and a member of Abingdon Episcopal Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Jana Neilson of Louisa, Va.; a son, James E. Eversole of Laurel, Md.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dugald M. Neilson of New Alexandria, Pa.; a sister, Margaret Pirc of Grove City, Pa.; and his life partner, A.J. Stafford of Gloucester.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. The funeral service conducted by the Rev. Dennis Schmidt will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Burial will be Saturday in Greensburg, Pa.
