A 16-year-old suspect in the fatal drive-by shooting of 17-year-old Jerrell Stokes surrendered to police Tuesday afternoon.
The suspect, who was not identified by police because of his age, was charged with murder and placed in custody, police spokesman Larry Hill said. He was to be arraigned in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court today.
Stokes, who lived in the 1800 block McDowell Road, was standing in front of a home in the 5100 block of E. Princess Anne Road with friends about 1:30 a.m. Sunday when a car drove by and four shots were fired, police said.
Stokes was shot once in the side and died two hours later at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A girl was grazed by another shot but was not hospitalized.
Friends of Stokes and sources close to the investigation said the shooting stemmed from a feud over a girl between teenagers from the Bromley and Fairlawn sections.
The feud escalated when teenagers from Bromley pistol-whipped a teenager from Fairlawn, according to the sources. Jerrell Stokes and his brother, Jason, 16, were involved in the beating, the sources said. Jason was present when his brother was shot.
