Normand C. Vallee Jr., 44, of the 400 block of Las Gaviotas Blvd., died at his residence after a long illness.
He was born Oct. 26, 1949, in Woonsocket, R.I. He was the son of the late Normand C. Vallee Sr. and Doris Doyon Vallee. He moved to Virginia last year, after living in New York City for 15 years. He was self-employed as an independent building contractor and handyman.
He had been recognized by former Mayor Dinkins of New York City for a community garden that he built for his neighborhood.
He is survived by his stepmother, Gabrielle Auger Vallee of Woonsocket, R.I.; a sister, Pat Vallee O'Connor of Chesapeake; three brothers, Ralph Vallee and Dennis Vallee, both of North Smithfield, R.I., and David Vallee of Woonsocket; six nieces and nephews, including Amy O'Connor of Chesapeake, Matthew O'Connor of Virginia Beach, Robert O'Connor of San Diego, Calif., Charlene Young of Washington and Christopher Vallee of Rhode Island.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. in the Buddhist Temple of South Norfolk, 2019 Cora St. (off Barnes Road), Chesapeake. Frances A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
