MAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULT WITH GUN AFTER ALTERCATION

Dare County sheriff's deputies were trying to break up a fight between two women when the husband of one of them pulled a 9 mm handgun on an officer, said Chief Deputy Rodney Midgett of the Dare County Sheriff's Department.

At 2 a.m. Wednesday, officers arrested Michael E. Thrash, 37, on a charge of assault by pointing a gun at an officer. The charge is a felony.

Thrash, who fled but was later apprehended at the intersection of George Daniels Road and Driftwood Drive near Manteo, also was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell and deliver, assault on a government official, disorderly conduct and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, police said.

Officers also confiscated more than $1,200 cash from Thrash.

No one was injured during any of the incidents.

``He had less than an ounce of crack cocaine. But there were four separate rocks in his car,'' Midgett said. ``For crack cocaine, it was a lot.

``For Dare County, this was a good-sized bust.''

Officers originally reported to the Wescott Park area of Roanoke Island after receiving reports of a gun being fired. Midgett said that when deputies arrived in the area, they found the two women ``in an altercation in the street. Thrash tried to interfere with the arrest of those women. We don't know who the original shots were fired at.''

Thrash was on probation at the time of his arrest, Midgett said. He is being held under a $10,000 bond at the Dare County Detention Center. A first-appearance hearing is scheduled for today in Manteo.

Additional charges are pending against Thrash, Midgett said.

Both women will be charged with fighting, the chief deputy added.
